Doing a trackday?

If you use your car intensively, for example by driving on the track, then a different tyre pressure is needed than when you only use your car normally. During a trackday it is recommended to pump up to 0.5 bar more into the tyre than recommended by the factory. This will make the tyre stiffer, so that it stays in better shape when you take a corner in a sporty way, for example. The same goes for the load: if your car is more heavily loaded, this will affect your tyre pressure and you will need to inflate the tyres less.

Finding the right tyre pressure

Inflating your tyres is important, but it's useful to know which is the right pressure for your car. Where are the factory specifications for your car? You can check the internet, but you can also find it in the instruction booklet of your car, on the inside of the fuel cap or on the doorpost. The pressure of the front or rear tyres can differ, so pay close attention to what is indicated for each tyre group. Tyre pressure also depends on the conditions of use and the load.
How often to measure?
How often you should measure the air pressure of your tyres depends on various factors. It is recommended that you measure the air pressure at least once a month and preferably every four weeks. This applies to normal use. If you occasionally go to a trackday or otherwise use your car more intensively, it is smart to measure the tyre pressure more often. Even then, buying a tyre pressure gauge is advantageous.

When to measure?
There are ideal conditions for measuring the pressure. Did you know that tyres have to be cold to measure air pressure? So make sure you have not driven more than three kilometres before measuring the air pressure, or wait at least ten minutes before measuring so that your tyres have cooled down again. Then you can take a realistic measurement.
Why do tyres go flat?
The compressed air with which we fill our tyres consists of molecules. These molecules are small enough to escape from the tyres (very slowly). Rubber molecules are quite dense, but the molecules of oxygen and nitrogen can still get through.
Rust on valve/edge damage
In addition, air can escape from your tyres if there is rust on the rims or if you have hit a kerb while driving, causing damage to the rims. It is also possible that a sharp object is stuck in the tread, causing the tyre to lose air. Check this and make sure that the valve is properly closed.

Check valve
Tip: You can easily check the inside of the valve for possible leakage with soapy water. In addition, check whether the rims and the valve are free of rust, because, as mentioned, this can also cause leakage. If necessary, you can inject a tyre sealant into the tyre. This is a temporary solution and your garage will not be happy with you. If the tyre has to be replaced, they will have a hard job cleaning the inside of the rim...
